Education helps to fight poverty

Oxfam Novib, member of Oxfam, is the ambassador of DIY. Through co-operation with partners in developing countries Oxfam aims to help more people to be able to help themselves. Education is an important weapon in the fight against poverty, it gives one the opportunity to build his future independently.

Children and teachers victims of the economical crisis

75 million children around the world are still not going to school. Ten years ago their number stood at 115 million. We're making progress, but much still needs to be done. Especially as the economic crisis is hitting developing countries extra hard. In recent years many children haven't been going to school, because their parents could no longer afford to send them. And many governments are giving less attention to teacher training.

Quality education for every child

Oxfam Novib supports partner organisations that provide education, when local authorities fail to do so. For instance, because there is too little money. Or it is a remote region, where quality education is difficult to organise.

The result of neglecting education: many children miss this indispensable first step towards a good life without poverty. Oxfam Novib believes that every child has the right to quality education. It supports organisations that train teachers, design curricula, supply teaching and learning materials, and set up schools.

Two-pronged approach: support and lobby

Nationally and internationally Oxfam Novib also addresses the governments of developing countries on their responsibilities. In the end it is they who have to provide quality education. Oxfam Novib's partner organisations also lobby their own governments. Often with result: many countries have gradually adopted good teaching methods throughout the territory.

In this manner a lot of people benefit directly and directly from Oxfam Novib's method: direct support of local partner organisations and pressure on governments. Thanks to this work method many more people will benefit from any commitment to the Oxfam Novib Trailwalker.
